You're right, sometimes when I'm reading a classic I feel impatient (hmm, maybe that's a bad bookish habit) and think: in the time I'm reading this book I could have finished three contemporary books from my (way too large) TBR pile! But in the end the good storytelling, characterization and message always win me over to the classics again.
