Fauna - Alissa York 3/5
Edal Jones, federal wildlife officer, sits at home with a burn-out. On one of her daily bike forays through Toronto, she comes across an auto-wreckers yard where proprietor Guy Howell offers sanctuary to animals and humans alike: a runaway teen and her massive black dog, a hawk with a broken wing, a soldier with a heart condition. Reluctantly, Edal befriends this strange group of people and finds healing for herself.
I like books in which an unlikely group of people become friends. This, plus the fact the book is about animal lovers, drove me to read this novel. A little bit more literary then what I usually read, but beneath all the modern style (which I don't really like) is a heartwarming story about broken people and animals and how they find hope. The ending was way too abrupt though and I didn't get to know some characters as well as I would have liked. There were also some really icky scenes from the childhood of some of the characters.
