Enders - Lissa Price
This is the sequel to Starters, which I really enjoyed. This has similar enjoyable components and surprises, but something about the setting was a little dull. There wasn't the same emphasis on the relationships and a lot of things just kind of get pushed aside for convenience. The resolution wasn't all that satisfying, and it didn't make a lot of sense, either. But you still might want to read this to find out what happens after the first book (which I definitely recommend).

The last of the month, and a surprisingly long book post! :) )

Book of the Month: De danske tigre. I will admit to a touch of "hero-worship" for want of better word. Lars is the head of HR where I work, and as such has been the one to "keep tabs on me" while I was sick. It was really, really interesting to see this different side of a man whom I see as this extremely kind and caring person.

Biggest Disappointment: The Hidden Staircase. I don't usually include rereads here, but this used to be an old favourite of mine, and it's such a shame when childhood favourites can't stand up to the test of time.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] dantheman23 mentioned today how popular the name Jack is for adults in fiction, but not in real life. It has become popular for baby boys over the past several years, but generally speaking you don't run into a lot of Jacks between the ages of 20 and 40. However, in books, on TV and in movies, it's very common for the main guy to be Jack. Jack Bauer, Jack Reacher, Jack from Revenge (totally forgot his last name), etc.

Then I mentioned how another thing they do in books a lot, as if it's normal, is have the characters sign their notes with just their first initial. The note will be like:

Thought of you when I saw this. I'll never forget our time in Rhode Island. --M

Why do they do that so often?

So here are two questions for you:

1. How many non-fictional adult guys (between ages 20 and 50, let's say) do you know of named Jack?

2. How often do you sign your notes with just your first initial rather than your first name?

My answers:

1. None that I can think of.
2. Like never, unless I were in a big rush and/or out of space on the page.

Hey, don't forget to post your book list here! :) Happy October!
