It's something pretending to be scientific, only it's pretty much just serving as a plot device. In this case, there's some actual science (string theory/alternate universes), but then that science is used to cover up a whole lot of plot weirdness. The term (which I must have picked up from somewhere), means... well, picture a writer waving his hand while saying, "It's because of... science! Yes. That's why."
