Happy June!

I guess I only finished two books this month.. for some reason it's so hard for me to keep track, even when I vow to write them down when I finish. I'm a forgetful girl. Anyway...

The Princess Diaries (Vol. 1) - Meg Cabot
14-year-old NYC girl finds out she's a princess of a small island in Europe. The audio version is read by Anne Hathaway, which is nice, but having it read to me also added to the annoyingness of the story. The main character is such a stereotypical dramatic teenager--I don't remember the movie portraying her that way. By the end of this, I was going to forget reading volumes 2 and 3 (that I had checked out at the same time), but have since changed my mind and will listen to them in smaller doses. :) I probably would've enjoyed this more if I had just read it instead of listened to it. I haven't seen the movie in awhile, but it seems pretty different.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith
A 30-something, single, African woman uses inheritance money to start a detective agency in Botswana. This was recommended by a couple of you and I enjoyed it, despite the fact that I typically like all the aspects of a story to contribute to the conclusion (in this book many cases are discussed on their own just to give an idea of her work, though they don't actually relate to the final conclusion). The end of this book was pleasant and made me want to read the next in the series, which I have already checked out! [With this book I was very glad to have audio, because I could hear how things are supposed to be pronounced. The word "Mma," for instance, actually does have the held-out mmm sound. "Mmmmmm-AH" is how the South African narrator pronounced it. It's used very often in the book because it is like saying "Miss" or "Ma'am." ]

Books for June: 2
Books for 2008: 11

Don't laugh at my small book totals, okay?

So many people have read The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency lately! I think it's cool when a bunch of people spontaneously read the same thing. I read it a couple months ago and loved it. Only I've wondered ever since how to pronounce "Mma", so I'm really glad you put that in there. :)
