Singled Out (2006) - Virginia Nicholson
(subtitle: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War) (audio book on radio BBC7)
Drawn from various memories and writings, this is a look at the generation of British women who grew up under the expectations to marry and start a family. Instead, they found themselves with a 1 in 10 chance of finding a husband after the carnage of the Great War.

I had never really thought about the "unmarried 2 million" so this was informative. It was interesting to see the way society reacted and changed during the 1920s. Although the book was repetitive at places, and that was even after it had been abridged.

"Duel" (1971) - Richard Matheson
(short story) (audio book on radio BBC7)
A traveling businessman is menaced on the highway by a huge diesel truck. He soon realizes that this guy is out to kill him!

Interesting setup, but I wasn't a fan of the writing or the reader. It came off as pretty dry. Maybe I will try the movie, it might work better as a visual medium.

Six Suspects (2008) - Vikas Swarup
Vivek Rai is dead. The police search each and every guest. Six of them are discovered with guns in their possession. Arun Advani, India's best-known investigative journalist unravels the lives of a bureaucrat; an American tourist; a tribesman; a Bollywood actress; a thief; and a politician.

The audio book was mostly just used as background noise while I was at work. I was bored for most of this. Not much of a "murder mystery." It's like a series of short stories or alternating chapters of loosely connected stories about each suspect --a bit similar to Q&A (Slumdog Millionaire) in that way. I couldn't find any of the characters sympathetic. About half way through it felt like it would never end, so I skipped to the last chapter. I probably would not read another book by this author. (Warning: Strong Language)

The Black Moth (1921) - Georgette Heyer
Disguised as a highwayman, Jack Carstares, the wrongly disgraced Earl of Wyncham, found himself again face-to-face with the wicked Duke of Andover. This time the Black Moth was attempting to abduct dark-haired beauty Diana Beauleigh.

I am having the worst time finding anything I like this month. If this wasn't Heyer I probably would have gave up. Heyer wrote this novel when she was a teenager, and I think it shows. It was around 100 pages in before I started to feel interested in this, and even after that there were whole chapters I felt like I could have skipped.

Sorry about the unsatisfying books last month!
