I thought it would be an interesting discussion if I posed the question to the community:

Tell me about your bookmarks.  Are they old friends (or reminders of old friends)?  Do you recycle scraps to make utilitarian place holders or new bits of glory?  What are your habits?  What are your favorites?

I read a lot of E-books.  However, a few weeks ago I began reading some particular print books.  When I needed to set them down, I realized that I had no bookmark at hand.  How very odd.

In fact, I realized that I hadn't used a regular bookmark in ages.  If I needed one, I had gotten into the habit of just grabbing whatever slip of scrap paper, envelope, or notecard was close at hand.

I did find some pretty bits to recycle into bookmarks--the ones in the photo above.  Perhaps you can recognize their origins?

As a postscript, I will add a neat idea my mother shared with me at New Year's when she was changing over to her new calendars:  We have a hard time throwing out the pretty images from the old years' calendars.  Some of the old calendars have thumnail prints of the monthly photos printed as a gallery on the back.  She cuts these into strips and continues to enjoy the mini-photos as her bookmarks.  (Her calendar thumnails were smaller than the ones on my old calendars, so I think they worked out for her a little better.)

I have some "proper" paper bookmarks that I've picked up at the library, or at conferences/workshops, etc. I use one of those if I can find one, but I often end up using a Post-it Note (folded over - don't want to get sticky stuff on the pages) or the receipt that I was given at the library, or whatever scrap of paper I have to hand.

As to favorites, I used to have a couple of Lord of the Rings (movie tie-in) bookmarks I'd picked up at the library... but I think those got lost in the shuffle or else so ragged I threw them away. :(
